Athletes Leading The Charge on CBD

Athletes and CBD: Why The Excitement?

If you watched a press conference following a televised sporting event and you saw the star athlete using CBD while answering questions, how would you react?  Many knee-jerk reactions could trigger questions about the substance used and its legality.  When a heavily bruised Ultimate Fighter Nate Diaz of the UFC did just this during his press conference, he had a simple response to people’s curiosities:

“It’s CBD,” he said.“It helps … inflammation and stuff like that,” he continued.

Starting, January 1st of 2018, that will be an acceptable answer.  That’s because the World Doping Agency has officially removed cannabidiol from it’s “banned” list.  The announcement is likely to generate a sigh of relief form Diaz and many athletes like him.

That’s because many athletes who play brutal contact sports turn to CBD for the anti-inflammatory properties they believe are much more effective than traditional medicines.

MMA Bali star Andrew Leone echoes those sentiments on Facebook while sharing NFL legend Leonard Marshall’s CBD story on Facebook:

Andrew Leone Leonard Marshall CBD

In a time where opioid abuse is a national crisis, CBD is getting national attention, especially from current and former athletes.  After the spotlights are off, athletes have injuries and conditions that will linger for the rest of their lives.  Medications meant to treat these conditions can come with side effects that create new problems and don’t improve the quality of life.

Leone and Marshall are two Elixinol brand advocates.  They are also part of the growing list of prominent athletes that champion the use of CBD to help deal with conditions that take place during and after their sporting careers.  They’ve learned how CBD can revitalize the body by engaging with their endocannabinoid system.

Why Are Athletes Championing CBD?

CBD taken either topically or orally is used to support the reduction of inflammation and pain, which in turn improves recovery time. The neuroprotective properties may help cognitive responses.  Yet, when it comes to energizing the endocannabinoid system, CBD isn’t solely used with the hopes of dealing with the negative sides of sports or activity.

So, it’s simply lack of knowledge of the endocannabinoid system and the differences between THC and CBD that causes people to raise questions after watching a star athlete use CBD at a press conference. They see someone using it, and it’s easy to assume it’s a psychoactive substance.  Since cannabidiol comes from industrial hemp, it’s doesn’t include THC levels that are associated with the “high” effect.  Instead, athletes are seeking out CBD as an alternative to THC.

Is CBD Just For Athletes?

Even casual fitness buffs want it to interact with cell mitochondria that convert sugars and amino acids into energy.  CBD can also reinforce a healthy paleo diet rich in fish, fruits and nuts.  That’s why you’ll find everyone from weekend warriors to executives purchasing CBD.

That’s why the World Doping Agency can lift a ban on the substance, and they are just the latest experts to come around.  In 2015, Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, became a stronger advocate about the potential benefits of CBD while making the distinction between healthy and high effects.

Different cannabinoids can have very different biological effects; CBD, for example, does not make people high and is not intoxicating,” she says.

Diaz, Marshall and Leone represent three of the best reasons for why CBD bans are lifted without the alarming questions.  However, they’re more than happy to explain how they feel about CBD and their quality of life.  If you have further questions about Elixinol, we can provide you with answers as well.  Feel free to contact us anytime.
