A brand new rum infused with CBD oil is already causing quite the stir on the London drinks scene. Apparently there was a bottleneck at the Dead Man’s Fingers stall at a recent London cocktail trade show where visitors could sample the new flavour.
The spiced rum, created by Halewood, contains a hemp-flavoured spirit infused with CBD.
So what does it taste like? “It is a difficult one to explain,” Lucy Cottrell, rum brand manager for Dead Man’s owner, Halewood Wines & Spirits, told just-drink.com. “We did tonnes of sampling. People were surprised by the unique properties and there was nothing comparable.”
It essentially has a plant-based taste with slight herbal notes, and is good for mixing with ginger ale.
While gin and vodka have really developed and expanded their infusion ranges in the past few years, rum tends to only be spiced or pineapple-infused, so it’s interesting to see this new line being explored.
This isn’t the first CBD spirit to make its way to Britain, but it is the first for a mainstream distiller, and it’s bound to be popular. The company has sold a quarter of a million bottles of Dead Man’s Fingers so far across Russia, China and Europe.
While its alcohol content is 40 per cent, there is no psychoactive THC in the product at all. The brand doesn’t necessarily think adding CBD to rum will have any health benefits, but have used it to add flavour and appeal to a new audience. And given its reception from bartenders and other drinks professionals at the trade show, it’s creating quite the buzz already.
